Apprentices and instructors have the room and storage they need for all their trades to learn in this new training facility. 

Moving from an older, smaller space to an adapted former big box store gave the Carpenters Union not just the right amount but the right type of space to combine its training facility with its regional offices. Apprentices split their time between classrooms and the workshop, so every classroom is physically or visually connected to the workshop. Large graphics make the room numbers easily visible from anywhere in the facility.

This facility also serves as the regional office for the Carpenters Union of Kansas City – St. Louis. The front of the space features an administrative suite, and the facility also has the ability to open up for public events including community meetings and political rallies.

St. Elizabeth Early Childhood Center

For years, the St. Elizabeth Early Childhood Center has been located across a heavy-traffic street from the Catholic Church, calling for their youngest students to journey back and forth multiple times a day. Hollis + Miller designed a master plan for the Church, putting high priority on uniting the Early Childhood Center, K-8 school and the Catholic Church on the same side of the street. The new design does just that, providing peace of mind for staff and parents, and also allows opportunities for growth and adaptations in the future.

The renovated rectory building will host eight new classrooms for infants through kindergarten students. The rectory, a residential home for members of the clergy, challenged the design team to develop innovative solutions to transform the space into a learning environment. The design incorporates research-based learning tools and showcases a touch of tradition with the existing stone walls of the rectory, as well as the connecting Church. The new early childhood center will feature a learning stair and sliding classroom walls for co-teaching, shared storage areas and indoor/outdoor collaboration spaces to expand fine motor skills. A large balcony will serve as a flexible commons area and gathering space for students, staff and parish members.

Expected completion of the St. Elizabeth Early Childhood Center is August of 2020.

The Learning Park, Tree House and Theatre in the Park are all flexible learning spaces unique to Soaring Heights. The flexible design emboldens educators and students to adapt their learning environment to the lesson.

This school replaces the elementary school lost on May 22, 2011, when the worst tornado disaster on record to date in the United States hit the City of Joplin.

Raytown Quality Schools was looking to expand its early childhood program after the overwhelming success of its first pre-kindergarten facility. Reimagining the interior of this tired school allows more preschool students the opportunity to start learning earlier, which research has shown leads to improved success throughout their academic and professional lives.

Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley’s campus dining center was aged and underutilized by students and faculty on campus. The goal of increasing attendance and creating a more inviting feel was a priority throughout the renovation of the dining area. Input was gathered from kitchen staff, MCC administrators, and the food service provider, ensuring seamless coordination and efficiency in every aspect. New tile, light fixtures and carpet completely transformed the space, providing students a comfortable option to stay on campus between classes.

This new Kansas City Diocese school combines the former St. Mary’s and Archbishop O’Hara high schools into one cohesive learning environment. A large atrium connects the chapel and academic spaces with a two-story learning stair, which encourages collaboration and community. The classrooms’ traditional style is complemented by flexible furniture that allow the spaces to adapt to each day’s teaching schedule.

Fraternities have a dedicated home that reflects their unique identities while still encouraging inter-fraternal events in the new Greek Village.

This cul-de-sac becomes activated with energy as the Greek community hosts barbecues and events. Students from all over campus are drawn to this new space. While all four homes are the same size and similar layout, each one is tailored to each fraternity’s unique culture and traditions. They feature traditional, ornate spaces that represent the tradition and history of their organizations.

Greek housing is a part of campus housing on SEMO’s campus, but the fraternities and sororities were housed in aging facilities. This is the first phase of relocating the Greek community to updated homes.

Once a large grocery store, an expansive retail building will be transformed into an Early Childhood Center, as well as other various educational support spaces.

It takes vision to look at an existing retail store and picture a learning environment in its place, but that is exactly the innovative vision that The Barstow School had in mind. The Early Childhood Center entrance will be where the previous pharmacy operated, utilizing the covered pharmacy drop-off area for a dedicated secure covered entry. Flexible program spaces such as a STEAM workshop and lab, a maker space, black box theater, café and collaborative space will fill the rest of the building, serving as a resource for the Barstow community.

Due to existing site constraints, there is no room for an outdoor playground around the building. Instead, as a secure and innovative solution, there will be an outdoor courtyard placed in the middle of the building. This opens doors for controlled outdoor learning experiences and adds natural daylighting through adjacent glazed windows into classrooms. The wide indoor play area will host a sensory table and a commons collaboration area that bleeds into built-in manipulative nooks.

Every space is an opportunity for learning. Described as a “dream school,” Trailwood focuses on hands-on, experiential learning.

Corridors that would traditionally be meant for travel are transformed into work areas with soft seating, tables and easily accessible technology. Accommodating 550 students grades pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, the Principal and community are excited about the possibilities this unique design provides.

Safety was a paramount concern throughout the design and construction because this new elementary school was built next to the existing facility, which stayed open and operational throughout construction. Careful coordination between the District, our team and JE Dunn’s construction team was paramount to ensure students and faculty at the existing school stayed safe and secure.

The community’s youngest learners thrive in their updated, interactive space.

Infants through first graders are excited to be in one, new building that encourages students to connect with the natural environment around them. Interior design and environmental graphics make this space come alive and encourage these little learners to imagine. It also helps these little learners to understand what a space’s purpose is without traditional wayfinding signage that they wouldn’t be able to read. The various learning environments include large instruction, small group and one-on-one.

The rural community of Chillicothe, Missouri, is committed to making big changes for their students. This new elementary school is just the first step in the District’s plan to get all their elementary school students in one new building and all their students on one campus around their high school.
