Blue Springs South High School
A stainless-steel jaguar commands attention and welcomes students at Blue Springs South High School’s new addition.

For the first time in almost two decades, Blue Springs South High School freshman are united under one roof alongside their peers. Instead of heading to the separate freshman center, incoming students were introduced to the new addition, which is part of the existing high school, in August 2019. The new addition gives students a space to call their own while staying connected with the other grade levels. Lively graphics in every shade of Blue Springs South’s school colors reinforce the South brand from the interior of the building all the way to the street view where a lighted stainless steel jaguar greets visitors and students, instilling a sense of school pride in everyone who walks through the doors.

The main connection point creating a cohesive bind between the existing and new building is a large commons area, where the eye is drawn to a large wall of wooden slats highlighted by learning stairs and a vibrant jaguar, the school mascot. This hang out space offers many options for socializing or studying, utilized by both the freshman wing as well as the upperclassmen. It serves as a transition and blending zone where students can collaborate, and a shared area that blends into the Project Lead the Way breakout spaces.
