Students are drawn to the Student Success Center’s second floor. It’s a bustling, highly flexible environment used daily for individual or small group study.

What was once a dark, broken-up and uninviting space is now a bright, open place where students want to be. Flexible furniture makes students feel comfortable and welcome and encourages various study styles. The new Success Center connects to the library, humanities building and campus center in a highly visible way, allowing students more collaborative learning.

Fraternities have a dedicated home that reflects their unique identities while still encouraging inter-fraternal events in the new Greek Village.

This cul-de-sac becomes activated with energy as the Greek community hosts barbecues and events. Students from all over campus are drawn to this new space. While all four homes are the same size and similar layout, each one is tailored to each fraternity’s unique culture and traditions. They feature traditional, ornate spaces that represent the tradition and history of their organizations.

Greek housing is a part of campus housing on SEMO’s campus, but the fraternities and sororities were housed in aging facilities. This is the first phase of relocating the Greek community to updated homes.

Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

A primarily commuter campus that once provided few amenities for its students, now has a space where they can gather, eat, study and exercise.

The result has been awe-inspiring. Students who once went directly to their vehicles to leave campus after class are now stopping by the center to grab a coffee and study with friends. Ping pong games are in progress, students are jogging on the track, and you can find children playing games. The Midwestern Baptist community now has a place to gather.

With a dining facility, bookstore and coffee shop, study space, recreation room, gym with track, Crossfit exercise room, child watch and alumni entertainment space, this student center’s design needed to be purposeful to seamlessly integrate all these unique services in a way that invited students to make themselves at home in the space.

Since its founding in 1957, it has been a major goal of the Seminary to open a student center that can serve its students outside of academic and spiritual growth. Hollis + Miller Architects worked with the school to master plan where the facility could sit on campus and how it could hold the variety of amenities they were hoping to offer.

A complete turnaround of a central gathering space, achieving record sales every single day of opening week.

Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley’s campus dining center was aged and underutilized by students and faculty on campus. The goal of increasing attendance and creating a more inviting feel was a priority throughout the renovation of the dining area. Input was gathered from kitchen staff, MCC administrators, and the food service provider, ensuring seamless coordination and efficiency in every aspect. New tile, light fixtures and carpet completely transformed the space, providing students a comfortable option to stay on campus between classes.

The stadium’s natural site is located within an existing quarry and will create a unique environment for many future athletic events.

Hollis + Miller was tasked with redesigning a new 10,000-seat stadium for Southeast Missouri State University to replace their 90-year-old existing stadium. Focusing on the player, fan and recruiting experience was key within Houck Field to help form a new identity for SEMO Athletics.

Located within an existing quarry, our team quickly seized the opportunity to expose the natural qualities of the rock to create a unique environment for fans to gather and engage with each other. Hollis + Miller illustrated the impact of a multi-phase project through 3D renderings and accurate cost assessments so the owner could understand each and every step to meet their goals. Sponsorships and partnerships were also a large part of the design. Thinking creatively with the athletic administration, areas were identified not only to bring in additional revenue, but further advance the student athletes’ experience through those partnerships. The redesign of Houck Field emulates the latest trends by not going for a sheer quantity of seats but focusing on the quality of the experiences within.

STL 505 Student Housing

Providing contemporary, comfortable residence for students and young professionals, the STL 505 housing complex will span over almost an entire city block.

Located in the core of downtown Springfield and right off historic Route 66, this brand-new housing complex will serve students and young professionals in an urban setting. The five-story, 500+ bed building is a short walk to Missouri State University’s campus and conveniently located along the university’s transit line. On-site amenities include underground parking, a coffee house, recreation spaces, fitness center, study rooms and private courtyards complete with grills and outdoor seating. Flexible gathering areas are designed for socialization or individual escapes, and an enclosed pet area is available for the pet-friendly residents. Slated to open in the fall of 2021, this contemporary complex will be a desirable residence in a revitalized downtown area.

An integrated fabrication lab brings forth many opportunities for engineering majors, art majors and the surrounding community.

Metropolitan Community College is relocating the Engineering Technology program from the Business and Technology Campus to the Penn Valley Campus to increase utilization of their existing building and create synergies between the college’s graphic design diagram and the engineering technology program.

Functions such as the fabrication lab and the 3D printing lab offer regular opportunities for students to collaborate, ideate and prototype in a shared space that will now be available to the graphic design program housed in the current Carter Arts Building. The physical placement of the program on the south edge of the Penn Valley campus is seen as a means of being a visible and usable asset to the community from which they can also access tools and technical expertise provided by talented and industry-connected faculty. In addition, it will feature a double-height space for the fabrication lab with greater connectivity to the exterior environment through the use of extensive glazing and covered outdoor spaces offering students their choice of environments in which to create.

Research shows that students who live on campus are more successfully academically because it is easier for them to connect to their peers and develop strong study habits. Nestled in a treed hillside, the 108-bed residence hall’s two-and four-bedroom suites have a breathtaking view of the wooded landscape. Each suite includes a full shared kitchen, bathrooms and a furnished living room.
