Delaware Elementary serves as the main hub for the district’s Special Education (SPED) department, so key goals of the space were to be inclusive and playful throughout while remaining sensitive to SPED students’ unique needs. Each grade-level neighborhood wing has its own flex space, with breakout spaces featuring gradient films to allow teachers to maintain a visual over the flex space while keeping students focused during one-on-one interactions. Each one also has integrated SPED spaces to keep kids in the neighborhoods with support spaces nearby. Clerestory runs the length of each neighborhood, as well as the commons to bring in ample daylight.

The color palette and wayfinding were chosen purposefully to include calming watercolors to be playful, but sensitive to the sensory needs of SPED students. Color-changing lights are also included in every space to provide calming moods or supportive lighting for changing student needs. A community room also allows for various meetings of the PTA, Boy & Girl Scouts and other community groups.
