Russell Jones Education Center
Designed with intention and invaluable faculty insight to foster well-being, the newly expanded Russell Jones Education Center is a pioneering therapeutic facility supporting students with emotional and behavioral needs through specialized sensory and recovery spaces, flexible outdoor access, an expanded gym and calming interiors.
The first of its kind in the area, Russell Jones Education Center serves as a therapeutic day treatment facility for students with emotional and behavioral needs beyond what can be supported in their neighborhood schools. Additions and enhancements carefully address the unique needs of the students who attend it, providing a safe, calming and inclusive space. The upgrades include new classrooms, improved spatial flow, and specialized spaces for recovery, sensory (both active and calming), essential skills and a maker space. A standout feature is the active sensory room, a large, flexible space connected to an internal courtyard and tricycle track, offering students the freedom to move and engage with the outdoors in a secure environment, supporting self-regulation in a natural setting. Cast on the walls of the active sensory room is a hand-sketched graphic showcasing the mascots of surrounding schools and education centers in a whimsical nature setting.

Recovery and de-escalation spaces were thoughtfully designed throughout the center, ensuring close proximity to classrooms when needed. The gymnasium was also expanded, emphasizing the importance of physical activity and movement as a space playing a critical role in the daily therapeutic routines of students. Natural, earthy tones and familiar textures fill the spaces, offering a sense of calmness, warmth and positivity. Faculty members were invaluable in the design and intention of the spaces and now enjoy an enhanced break room and an exercise room overlooking a neighboring lake.

The Russell Jones Education Center is not only a testament to the district’s commitment to the mental health and well-being of faculty and students but also an example of how intentional design can support therapeutic outcomes.
