Greenway Elementary is the sixth iteration of a district prototype, thoughtfully adapted to unite students from the former Lakewood and Winnwood Elementary communities. Designed to foster a strong sense of belonging, the school creates a welcoming environment where every student feels supported and proud to be part of something new.
Built on an existing site beside a small lake, the design embraces the natural setting with soft colors, organic materials, and calming views. The guiding concept, “Ripples,” symbolizes how small actions can create lasting impact—an idea reflected in the building’s identity and layout. Each learning neighborhood is themed around a unique water biome, using color and graphics to give each space a distinct personality. To celebrate the new beginning, students, families, and staff selected the otter as the school’s mascot—playful, curious, and perfectly tied to the water-inspired theme.
While based on a familiar prototype, the layout was reimagined to frame lake views and enhance natural light. The main entrance sits on the upper level, allowing ground-level access from all floors and improving overall accessibility. Angled columns at the entrance mimic tree branches, and a flexible outdoor classroom connects to both the art room and commons, overlooking the lake.
Inside, a skylight above the central bridge brings daylight into the heart of the building and down to the Media Center, designed to feel like the school’s living room with a warm hearth for storytelling and gatherings. Nearby, a cozy reading nook offers a quiet space for reflection. The adjacent Tinker and Create spaces support a range of learning styles, from traditional instruction to hands-on exploration. Ripple graphics in the Create space reveal molecular patterns up close, while the Tinker room includes a breakout area, generous storage, and a garage-style door for flexibility.
With thoughtful design rooted in nature and community, Greenway is a place where learning and belonging go hand in hand.
