Due to a growing population in Douglas County, Colorado, Sierra Middle School will soon add 6th grade to its roster. To accommodate this expansion and better serve its students, a 32,000-square-foot addition and renovation are slated for completion by January 2027.
Built in 1975, the school has seen no significant renovations since the 1990s. The two-story addition will include 20 new classrooms seamlessly connected to existing learning spaces. Designed with large windows to bring in ample natural light, the new addition will offer stunning mountain views, taking advantage of the picturesque environment that serves as the school’s backdrop.
The programs housed within the new addition will serve the entire student population, ensuring that all students benefit from the expanded learning opportunities.
Students and staff can also look forward to an expanded cafeteria with new café-style seating and bold graphics celebrating school spirit. A newly renovated and expanded staff lounge, as well as additional collaborative spaces, will further enhance the sense of community and connection at Sierra Middle.
Infrastructure upgrades will also be implemented to support the school’s growth and long-term sustainability. The school is currently on a well water system with limited capacity. By connecting to city water and installing a new water main, the school will benefit from more reliable water service and increased fire safety. This includes the addition of six new fire hydrants, replacing the single existing hydrant located 300 feet from the school.
To ease longstanding traffic backups caused by minimal bussing and insufficient drop-off space, a new half-mile-long, five-lane queuing area will be added on site. Previously, cars would back up onto the street in front of the school during peak times. Sierra Middle is also partnering with Douglas County to create an expanded water basin to support continued population growth in the area.
A new secure entry will be a central feature of the improved site circulation, providing both increased safety and a more welcoming entrance to the school.
These updates mark an exciting new chapter for Sierra Middle School, supporting its growing student body and offering a modern learning environment for years to come.
