A vibrant addition to Dear Elementary School, the Richmond Early Childhood Center sparks curiosity and imagination through colorful, playful spaces that give Richmond’s youngest learners a joyful start to their educational journey.
Born from a growing community, the Richmond Early Childhood Center expands Dear Elementary with a playful, inclusive environment where learning begins through exploration. Inspired by the folds of origami, the exterior’s red metal panels express movement and school pride, while inside, warm wood tones, soft pastels, and textured finishes create a welcoming, sensory-rich environment.
A large open play area with a learning stair serves as the heart of the addition, connecting ten classrooms, admin spaces, and an OT/PT room. Smaller breakout spaces, including calm-down rooms, provide comfort and focus, supporting every child’s emotional and sensory needs. The sensory lab, detailed with blue resinous flooring and light green ceiling panels evoking tree canopies, invites wonder and hands-on learning. At the secure entry, a bold red Spartan head graphic welcomes students into a space that blends school pride with play.
Fully inclusive and biophilic in design, the center connects seamlessly to Dear Elementary, offering a nurturing start for Richmond’s youngest learners to grow strong, curious and connected.
