An eye-catching new addition at Columbia Independent School offers upper-school students a new space that emmpowers dynamic experiences and school pride.
With an expanding student population, Columbia Independent School explored expansion options for the immediate and distant future, while fostering a culture of community, collaboration and connection. The design team developed a phased approach including a master plan, addition and renovation to the existing school to empower student inquiry and differentiated learning opportunities while also supporting positive teaching experiences.
The new upper school addition, which houses high school-aged students, offers aspirational spaces for younger students and inspires the entire campus through distinct visual designs. An outdoor plaza connects to the upper commons, giving a higher education campus “feel” to the space and bringing in ample daylight. An open, dynamic media center serves as an adaptable space with flexible furniture to fit many group sizes and community gatherings, as well as an updated fine arts area for various functions and performances. The interiors reflect a clean, modern aesthetic with vibrant colors, strong contrasts, intricate detail and a sense of movement, energizing the environment for all learners.
