The Francis Howell School District was in the midst of strategically deploying the remainder of a bond program to fulfill commitments across the district while maximizing every available dollar. Hollis + Miller was engaged to facilitate a clear path forward, with cost management and transparent communication at the forefront of every decision. Our team completed a new transportation maintenance facility, multipurpose/wrestling addition, two renovated high school auditoriums, and a new synthetic turf baseball/softball combo field, while positioning the district with a bond program surplus.
The primary goal at both locations was to reimagine the existing spaces as modern, inspiring performing arts centers reflecting each school’s identity and serve students for years to come.
The redesign features new modern finishes, improved circulation and upgraded state-of-the-art theatrical systems. Through creative design solutions, seating was also increased, and the layout within each auditorium was improved to better serve the school communities. Integrated lighting and intentional pops of color thoughtfully reverberate school pride throughout each space. At Central, an emphasized proscenium anchors the space, complemented by layered materials including warm wood tones and perforated acoustic paneling. At High, sleek finishes elevate the space, and variegated seating playfully incorporates school colors.
In addition to the auditorium renovations, the pre-function areas were also refreshed with digital signage, dedicated casework and modern finishes to enhance the entry experience.
The existing baseball/softball field was fully replaced with a cost-efficient, low-maintenance synthetic turf field, giving student-athletes a high-quality environment to compete while considering maintenance needs. Renovated dugouts, bullpens on each side of the field, and a dual-lane batting cage provide athletes and coaches the amenities needed for high-level competition.
Through thoughtful prioritization, community-informed design, and a relentless focus on managing costs and delivering value, Francis Howell Central now has new, modernized facilities that will elevate the student experience across both the arts and athletics for years to come.
The 5,650 SF multipurpose addition at Francis Howell High School expands opportunities for student activities and events while seamlessly integrating with the existing structure. Strategically located to provide direct athletic adjacency, the space addresses a longstanding need for wrestling mat storage through two motorized mat movers, ultimately saving space and streamlining setup/breakdown. By relocating wrestling to this dedicated addition, the auxiliary gym is freed for a broader range of athletic events and activities. School pride is emphasized throughout the design through bold colors and graphics, with striped gold and white acoustic baffles complementing the wall graphics to create a cohesive, spirited environment.
