Indian Hills Middle School had a vision: to create a dynamic, collaborative learning space that could accommodate a variety of learning styles, group sizes and activities. Through the co-creation process, Hollis + Miller worked closely with stakeholders to understand the school’s needs, ensuring that every design choice was made with empathy, innovation and purpose. Our team gained valuable insights into how the space needed to function, feel and evolve over time. Teachers and administrators expressed a strong desire for a multifunctional area that could support small group learning, large-scale presentations, after-school activities and hands-on projects.
The new 1,600-square-foot, two-story addition addresses every need and seamlessly integrates into the school’s existing structure, demonstrating how even a relatively small expansion can transform the way students and teachers interact. Strategically positioned near the school’s entrance, the new flex space is one of the first things visitors are met with when they enter the school. Natural light from large floor-to-ceiling windows floods the area, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The lower level offers flexible furniture that allows for reconfiguration and various spaces for group work, co-teaching opportunities and autonomy, while the upper level features a bold-colored mezzanine, functional corridor space and conference room. Connecting essential corridors, this space is at the heart of the building—something students and staff engage with daily.
Every element of the space was thoughtfully designed to enhance the student experience. School pride is woven throughout the space with modern metal textures, bold school colors, and a large, perforated metal Knight helmet cast at the front of the space, creating an environment that balances school pride with an elevated aesthetic. Privacy restrooms ensure inclusivity and comfort for all students, aligning with the evolving needs of modern schools. An outdoor learning area extends the classroom experience beyond four walls, encouraging experiential learning and connection to nature. Tackable surfaces allow students and teachers to showcase ideas, artwork, and collaborative projects, making learning more interactive and engaging. Every aspect of the space was designed with clear sightlines, allowing teachers to provide oversight without being intrusive, fostering student independence and autonomy. By carefully balancing innovation with practical needs, this space is built to grow with the school and its students.
