At North Kansas City Schools' Future Ready Lab, imagination meets innovation.
The Future Ready Lab is more than just a classroom—it’s a gateway to innovation, creativity and hands-on learning. Located in the Northland Innovation Center, this cutting-edge space is designed to immerse students in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education through state-of-the-art tools and collaborative experiences.
Inspired by the world-renowned Garner Holt Productions factory—creator of hundreds of animatronics featured in Disney parks—the lab introduces students to the fascinating world of robotics and automation. Hollis + Miller Architects and McCownGordon Construction worked closely with NKC Schools to craft a space seamlessly integrating technology, engineering and the arts. Flexible furniture allows for dynamic collaboration and reconfiguration to adapt to every project and learning style. Bold environmental graphics and bright colors are woven throughout the space, sparking creativity and energizing young minds.
At the heart of the lab are Spark-e robots—advanced animatronic figures students can program and maneuver to bring their projects to life. Alongside these robots, the lab is equipped with hands-on tools like embroidery machines, a laser cutter, 3D printers, and more, giving students endless opportunities to experiment and innovate.
Students design and program animatronic figures, crafting engaging shows that blend storytelling, engineering and artistic expression. From programming robots with ten independently controlled motors to set design, costuming, voice acting, and scriptwriting, students explore every facet of the creative process.
